Consensus does not mean unanimous

The topic of consensus building has recently surfaced as a result of Fiscal Court’s vote against the saltwater shrimp research project for Hardin County.  While 5 of the 9 current members of Fiscal Court did not support this research project, it is interesting to see seven of the eight candidates running for Fiscal Court in November’s election are on record supporting the project - coincidence or politics?

Most Serious Issue

County governments across the Commonwealth are drowning in red ink from the severe financial burdens local jails are experiencing in housing and caring for “state prisoners”.  Some of our smaller counties are nearing bankruptcy over jail funding issues.  Virtually every county is just one major medical claim away from insolvency.

Playing political games

Some Democratic leaders in our state must believe Kentuckians never get tired of hearing hollow attacks on Gov. Ernie Fletcher. Now they are singing the chorus that Gov. Fletcher is eliminating preferential treatment for veterans in state hiring. This is the most absurd and obviously political claim yet in a coordinated campaign to smear the governor and his administration.

Ambulance station funding debate drives on

For months Fiscal Court has debated how to fund construction of Hardin County's new ambulance station. The need for a new station arose when Hardin Memorial Hospital decided to build an ambulatory surgical center on the site of the existing main ambulance station. The old station adequately satisfied the county's requirements and the need to relocate is totally driven by Hardin Memorial's expansion.

Time to rise above bickering

For days, I was reluctant to respond to Hardin County Magistrate Bill Brandenburg's comments in the Sept. 11 edition of The News-Enterprise. However, the more I reflected on his inaccurate statements, personal attacks and political posturing, I felt compelled to provide clarification.

Let me begin by stating I believe elected officials should not engage in publicly chastising, by name, the citizens we serve. When obliged to respond to criticism, we should do so with facts refuting the accusations we disagree with. We should not use print media or courtroom video cameras to attack, by name, those we work for.
